The women's discus throw at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 5 and 7, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .

New Zealander Beatrice Faumuina became world champion . She won ahead of the Belarusian defending champion, Olympic third from 1996 and Vice European Champion from 1994 Elina Swerava . The Russian Olympic runner-up in 1996, Natalia Sadova , won the bronze medal.

qualification

29 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 62.50 m. Four athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the eight athletes placed next to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 59.88 m was enough for the final.
