Straze (May 2014)

The Straze ( own spelling STRAZE for " Stra lsunder Straße Ze hn / Elf") is a culture and initiative center in the Greifswald district of Steinbeckervorstadt.

History of the house

The “Zum Greif” society house, built between 1846 and 1849, is a listed building. The building is the oldest preserved venue of the Greifswald concert and theater industry. In the south wing is the last preserved gallery hall from the time of late classicism in Greifswald.

In the mid-1920s, the property at Stralsunder Straße 10/11 was acquired by the University of Greifswald in order to furnish office and living space for its employees. In 1930 the Institute for Development Mechanics moved into rooms in the house. Until 1934 the building housed the cafeteria , the institute for church music and the dental institute. The Institute for Human Heredity and Eugenics was opened in December 1933 under the direction of Günther Just .

A sports hall was later set up in the hall. Most recently, the university made the building available to the student theater and a student radio before it was sold to a housing association in 2008. Soon afterwards, they applied for the house to be demolished.

Current usage

In 2013, Stralsunder Straße 10 GmbH acquired the house and began the extensive, listed renovation. The house is run by the non-profit association Kultur- und Initiativehaus Greifswald eV . a. Funded from the “National Urban Development Projects” program (2014–2017) by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Home Affairs and from the state government's strategy fund.
