The men's 5000 meter race at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 8 and 9, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .
With gold and bronze, the long-distance runners from Kenya won two medals in this competition. Daniel Komen became world champion . He won ahead of the Moroccan vice world champion in 1995 and Olympic third in 1996, Khalid Boulami . Bronze went to Tom Nyariki .
