The men's 5000 meter run at the World Athletics Championships in 1993 was held on August 14 and 16, 1993 in the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart .
The runners from Ethiopia won two medals in this competition, silver and bronze. The Kenyan Ismael Kirui became world champion . He won ahead of Haile Gebrselassie , who celebrated his first world-class successes here at the start of a great sports career. Less than a week later, Gebrselassie won over 10,000 meters . In June of this year he had already won silver over 5000 and bronze over 10,000 meters at the African Championships . Third place went to the vice world champion from 1991 , Olympic third from 1992 and African vice champion from 1993 over 10,000 meters Fita Bayisa . The race was dominated by the Africans . The best runner who did not come from Africa was the Brit Robert Denmark in ninth place.

Record improvement
The Kenyan world champion Ismael Kirui improved the existing world championship record in the final on August 16 by 11.70 seconds to 13: 02.75 minutes.
