The women's 400-meter hurdles at the 1993 World Athletics Championships was held from August 16-19, 1993 in the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart .
The British Olympic champion in 1992 and Vice World Champion in 1991 Sally Gunnell became world champion . With her winning time she set a new world record. Sally Gunnell had also won an Olympic bronze medal in her country's 4 x 400 meter relay in 1992 and won another relay bronze here in Stuttgart on the final day. The US-American Sandra Farmer-Patrick took second place as in the Olympic Games last year. She was only five hundredths of a second behind the winner. Bronze went to the Russian Margarita Ponomarjowa , who also won a silver medal with the Russian 4 x 400 meter relay on the final day of these world championships.

Record improvement
The British world champion Sally Gunnell improved the world championship record in the final on August 19 by 37 hundredths of a second to 52.74 s, which she also set a new world record.
Preliminary round
The preliminary round was carried out in five runs. The first four athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.
