The women's 800-meter run at the 1993 World Athletics Championships was held from August 14th to 17th, 1993 in the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart .

The world champion was the three-time Africa champion ( 1990 : 800 meters / 1500 meters - 1993 : 800 meters) Maria de Lurdes Mutola from Mozambique , the second place went to the Russian vice world champion from 1983 , third from the World Cup in 1987 and third from the European Championship in 1986, Ljubow Gurina . As at the 1991 World Championships, bronze went to Romanian Ella Kovacs .

The existing world championship record was not set and not improved at these world championships.

The world champion Maria de Lurdes Mutola from Mozambique set a new African record in the final on August 17th with 1: 55.43 min.

doping

There was a doping case in this competition.

The first seventh-placed Russian defending champion Lilija Nurutdinova tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol and received a four-year ban, which led to the end of her sports career. Your result at these world championships was canceled.

Two female athletes in particular were disadvantaged;

  • The Polish Anna Brzezińska would actually have been entitled to participate in the semi-finals based on her time achieved in the third heat.
  • The German Christine Wachtel could actually have taken part in the final through her placement in the second semi-final race.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was carried out in five runs. The first two athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - and the six fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.
