1990 African Athletics Championships

The 7th African Athletics Championships took place from 3 to 6 October 1990 in the Cairo International Stadium . For the third time after 1982 and 1985, Cairo hosted the African Athletics Championships.

Decisions were made in 23 disciplines for men and 18 disciplines for women. For women there have not yet been any competitions in the 3,000-meter obstacle course , triple jump , pole vault and hammer throw .

218 athletes from 23 countries took part. Zoubida Laayouni ( MAR , discus throw ) won her sixth title, Lucienne N'Da ( CIV , high jump ) and Hanan Ahmed Khaled ( EGY , shot put ) each won for the third time. Furthermore, managed to successfully defend the title Othmane Belfaa (ALG, high jump), Robert Welikhe ( KEN , shot put), Hassan Ahmed Hamad (EGY, Discus), Dinah Yankey ( GHA , 100-meter hurdles ), Chioma Ajunwa ( NGR , long jump ) and Agnetha Chelimo (KEN, 5000 m track walking ) and the Nigerian relay of women over 4 × 100 m and 4 × 400 m . The Nigerian men triumphed for the fifth time in a row in the 4-by-100-meter relay.

The outstanding athlete in Cairo was Fatima Yusuf , who won gold medals in the 200 and 400 meters and in both sprint relays.
