1996 African Athletics Championships

The 10th African Athletics Championships took place from June 12 to 16, 1996 in the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in the Cameroonian capital, Yaoundé .

Decisions were made in 22 disciplines for men and 18 disciplines for women. For women, the 10,000-meter run was canceled and there were no competitions in the 3000-meter obstacle course , pole vault and hammer throw . For it was 5000-meter race of the women included in the program for the first time.

307 athletes from 33 countries took part. The Algerians Hakim Toumi (hammer throw) and Dounia Kara (5000 m track walking) succeeded in defending their title . In addition, the Nigerian women's 4 x 400 meter relay won for the sixth time overall and for the fifth time in a row at the African Championships.
