African Athletics Championships 2002

The November 7th stadium in Radès, home of the 2002 African Athletics Championships.

The 13th African Athletics Championships took place from August 6 to 10, 2002 in the November 7th stadium in Radès near Tunis . Competitions were held in 22 disciplines for men and 21 disciplines for women. For the men’s 3000 meter obstacle course , there was no corresponding competition for women. A total of 417 athletes from 42 countries took part.

A number of performances in the sprint and long jump competitions were favored by a sometimes strong tailwind. The most successful athletes were Frank Fredericks from Namibia ( 100 m , 200 m ), Janus Robberts from South Africa ( shot put , discus throw ), Kaltouma Nadjina from Chad (200 m, 400 m ) and Françoise Mbango Etone from Cameroon (long jump, triple jump ) two gold medals each.

With Éric Milazar ( MRI , 400 m), Djabir Saïd Guerni ( ALG , 800 m), Abderrahmane Hammad (ALG, high jump ), Younès Moudrik ( MAR , long jump), Hatem Ghoula ( TUN , 20 km walk ), Syrine Balti (TUN , Pole vault ), Monia Kari (TUN, discus throw), Aïda Sellam (TUN, javelin throw ) eight athletes managed to defend their title. In addition, the Nigerian women's 4 x 400 meter relay was able to repeat its victory from 2000 .
