Margaret Simpson Esi (* 31 December 1981 in Krapa , Ashanti Region ) is a former Ghanaian athlete , referring to the heptathlon but specializes in the javelin celebrated Was.
Athletic career
Margaret Simpson gained first international experience in 1997 when she took fourth place in the javelin throw at the Junior African Championships in Ibadan with a distance of 44.36 m and also reached fourth place in the long jump with 5.69 m. In 1999 she won the gold medal in the heptathlon at the Junior African Championships in Tunis with 5366 points and secured the silver medal in the Ghanaian 4 x 100 meter relay in 47.13 s. She then took part in the Africa Games in Johannesburg for the first time , where she finished fourth with 5089 points. The following year she took part in the Junior World Championships in Santiago de Chile , but could not finish her competition there. In 2001 she took part for the first time in the World Championships in Edmonton , Canada , where she reached 13th place with 5748 points. In 2002 she won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester with 5906 points behind the Australians Jane Jamieson and Kylie Wheeler and then won with 6105 points the African Championships in Radès .
In 2003 she was fifth at the Hypo-Meeting in Götzis with 6120 points and qualified again for the World Championships near Paris , but could not finish her competition there. She then won the African Games in Abuja with a new player record of 6152 points. In the following year she defended her title at the African Championships in Brazzaville with 6154 points and was previously fifth at the Hypo meeting with 6306 points. She qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens , where she finished ninth with 6253 points . In 2005 she improved her own African record to 6423 points at the Hypomeeting and thus reached fourth place and qualified again for the World Championships in Helsinki , where she won the bronze medal with 6375 points behind the Swede Carolina Klüft and Eunice Barber from France. Simpson was the first Ghanaian athlete to win a medal at World Athletics Championships.
In 2006 she did not play any competitions, but in 2007 she returned to her old strength with a win at the Africa Games in Algiers with a new player record of 6278 points. She also took part in the World Championships in Osaka , but was able to finish her competition again. In 2008 she did not contest any competitions and in 2009 she missed participation in the World Championships in Berlin. In 2010 she won the African Championships in Nairobi with 6031 points and then started at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi , where she had to end her competition early. The following year she was at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea with 6183 points 12th and then won for the third time in a row at the Africa Games in Maputo with 6172 points. In 2012 she played her last African Championships in Porto-Novo , where she broke off the heptathlon prematurely, but won in her strongest individual discipline, the javelin with a width of 54.62 m. She also qualified for the Olympic Games in London, but did not start there for a short time and thus temporarily ended her career at the age of 30. In 2017 and 2018 she started in individual competitions in the javelin throw, but decided on November 7, 2018 to end her career entirely.
