The 17th African Athletics Championships (officially 17th CAA Safaricom African Senior Athletics Championships ) took place from July 28th to August 1st, 2010 at Nyayo National Stadium in Kenya's capital, Nairobi .

Over 800 athletes from 46 countries competed in 44 competitions, 22 each for men and women.

Originally, the African Championships, as decided at the CAA Congress in April 2007 in Dakar, Senegal, were to be held from April 28 to May 2, 2010 in the Moi International Sports Center . In September 2009, the Confédération Africaine d'Athlétisme decided to postpone the event because the preparations by the Kenyan organizers were well behind their schedule. Three months later, the Nyayo National Stadium was named as the new competition venue.
