Meselech Melkamu (born April 27, 1985 in Debre Markos ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner .

Career

In 2004 she won her first international title when she won the junior race at the World Cross Country Championships in Brussels and the 5000 meter run at the Junior World Athletics Championships in Grosseto .

At the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , she finished fourth over 5000 m. In the same year she ran past an individual medal at the World Cross Country Championships in Saint-Galmier in fourth on the long distance and sixth on the short distance, but won the team championship with Ethiopia on both routes.

At the 2006 World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka she was again involved in winning both team titles for Ethiopia, but this time also as a two-time bronze medalist in the individual standings. A victory at the Great Ireland Run was followed by sixth place over 5000 m at the African Championships in Bambous . In 2007 she was able to repeat her successes from the previous year at the Cross Country World Championships in Mombasa , but only on the long distance, since the short distance race had been abolished. At the World Championships in Osaka she was sixth over 5000 m.

In 2008 she won the silver medal at the indoor world championships in Valencia over 3000 m behind her compatriot Meseret Defar . In her victory over 5000 m at the African Championships in Addis Ababa, however, she was able to beat Defar. At the Olympic Games in Beijing , she only finished eighth over 5000 m.

In 2009 she won her fourth bronze medal at the World Cross Country Championships in Amman , after finishing only ninth at the World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh a year earlier . However, the Ethiopians had to admit defeat Kenya after seven victories in a row in the team standings. On June 14th, 2009 Melkamu ran 10,000 m in 29: 53.80 minutes at an athletics meeting in Utrecht . After Wang Junxia , Tirunesh Dibaba and Elvan Abeylegesse, she was only the fourth woman who managed to cover this distance in under 30 minutes. With her time, at the same time a new African record, she took second place in the all-time world best list.

At the World Championships in Berlin , she finished second over 10,000 m in 30: 51.34 minutes, just behind Kenyan Linet Chepkwemoi Masai . In the 5000 m final, Melkamu finished fifth in 15: 03.72 minutes.

In 2010 she won her fifth bronze medal at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz and led Ethiopia to second place in the team standings. At the African Championships in Nairobi , she won the silver medal in the 10,000 meter run behind Tirunesh Dibaba, then she won the Tilburg Ladies Run 10K , and with a win at the Obudu mountain run , she became the first Africa champion in the mountain run .

In April 2016 she won the Hamburg Marathon with a new course record in 2:21:55 h.

Meselech Melkamu is 1.58 m tall and weighs 47 kg.
