Debre Markos

Debre Markos ( Amharic ደብረ ማርቆስ däbrä marqos, also Debre Marqos , Mankorar ) is a city in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. The city is at an altitude of 2446 m. It has 60,834 inhabitants in 2006 (calculation). The city owes its name to its main church, which was built at the end of the 19th century and is dedicated to St. Mark . Debre Markos has an airport.
The city was the seat of the Negus Tekle Haymanot . Italy erected a large fortification here during the time of Italian East Africa , which was abandoned on April 3, 1941 during the East Africa campaign . Until the administrative structure was restructured in 1995, Debre Markos was the capital of the Gojam province .
