Cross Country World Championships 2009

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 37th IAAF World Cross Country Championships (official 37th IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 2009 ) took place on 28. March 2009 in Amman ( Jordan instead).

course

On the grounds of the Al Bisharat Golf Club , a loop of 1500 m and about 30 meters in altitude had been set up, which could be extended to 2000 m. There was also a start area of 200 m and a target section of 300 m. The men covered 12 km, the women and juniors 8 km and the juniors 6 km.

Competitions

The competitions consisted of one race for men, one for women, one for juniors and one for juniors, each with its own team rating, in which the placements of the best four runners were added. The adult races were endowed with a total of $ 280,000 in prize money, of which the individual winners each received $ 30,000 and the winning teams received $ 20,000.

In the men’s race, Gebregziabher Gebremariam prevailed in the final sprint on the final climb and won. It was his fifth individual and his tenth team medal. After his compatriot Kenenisa Bekele, he is only the second runner to have won the cross-country world championship title in both juniors and seniors. In the team competition, Kenya won just ahead of Ethiopia; because of the equality of points, the placement of the fourth runner in each team made the difference.

While the Kenyan men have been waiting in vain for an individual title since 1999, the women Florence Jebet Kiplagat achieved the first Kenyan individual victory since 1995. Kiplagat also prevailed on the climb to the goal against her long-leading compatriot Linet Chepkwemoi Masai . New Zealander Kimberley Smith , who set the pace in the first half of the race, was the fastest non-African runner in 13th place.
