Leonard Patrick Komon (born January 10, 1988 in Korungotuny, Mount Elgon District , Western Province ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner .

Life

From 2002 he attended the Cheptais Secondary School and successfully competed in various national school championships in track and cross-country running . In 2005 he had to leave school because his family could no longer afford the school fees and work as a helper on his father's farm. However, the marathon runner Steven Matebo Cheptot became aware of him, and Komon continued his athletic career under his guidance.

The following year he qualified fourth in the national championship for the junior race of the World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka . There he won the silver medal and was then signed by the manager Gianni Demadonna .

The following year he was fourth in the junior category at the World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa and won gold with the team.

In 2008 he started in the adult race of the Cross Country World Championships in Edinburgh and won the silver medal behind record world champion Kenenisa Bekele and in front of defending champion Zersenay Tadese . He broke the 27-minute mark over the 10,000-meter distance , but had to retire injured in the national qualifying race for the Beijing Olympic Games .

At the 2009 World Cross Country Championships in Amman, he finished fourth and won gold with the team. He achieved the same individual and team placement the following year at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz .

As in the previous year, he won the Singelloop Utrecht 2010 and improved the world record in the 10 km road run by 17 seconds to 26:44 min. Two weeks later he defeated the old world record holder Micah Kipkemboi Kogo at the Grand 10 Berlin and ran the fastest time on German soil with 27:12 minutes.

In November he set another world record in road running at the Zevenheuvelenloop with 41:13 minutes over 15 km.

In 2011 he won the Würzburger Residenzlauf , the Healthy Kidney 10K , the Dam tot Damloop , the Grand 10 Berlin , the Great South Run and the Peuerbach New Year's Run .

Leonard Patrick Komon is 1.75 m tall and weighs 54 kg. He is employed by the Kenya Airports Authority as a firefighter and is trained by Juma Ndiwa. Since January 2008 he has been looked after by the manager Bob Verbeeck and his company Golazo .
