Western ( West ) was a province of Kenya . Their capital was Kakamega .

The province had about 4,023,000 inhabitants. The most important population group in Westerns was the Bantu ethnic group of the Luhya .

Western ranged from the hills in the north around Bungoma to the lowlands on Lake Victoria near Busia . On the border with Uganda lying Mount Elgon . The last rainforest in Kenya, the Kakamega forest, was located in Western .

The most important branch of the economy was agriculture, which included subsistence farming with corn and millet as well as the commercial cultivation of tea and sugar cane as well as cattle breeding (dairy cattle and poultry). There was also a paper mill in Webuye and the Kakamega forest has limited tourist use.

As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan provinces were dissolved. The counties of Bungoma , Busia , Kakamega and Vihiga are located in the western province .
