Central (Swahili: Kati , in German Zentral ) was a province of Kenya . Their capital was Nyeri .

As the name suggests, the province was in the center of the country, north of the capital Nairobi . The temperatures were lower than in other parts of the country due to the altitude. Central was an important coffee-growing area.

Central had about 4,145,000 inhabitants. Important population groups were Bantu such as the Kikuyu , Embu and Meru .

During the time of British colonial rule in Kenya, the area of Central was considered the White Highlands and was populated by white settlers. This met with resistance from the local black population, who saw their land rights violated. So the province became the center of the Mau Mau uprising in the 1950s.

As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan provinces were dissolved. The counties of Kiambu , Kirinyaga , Murang'a , Nyandarua and Nyeri are located in the Central Province .
