Murang'a , often also in the spelling Muranga , is a small town about 70 km northeast of Nairobi in Kenya with about 11,000 inhabitants (as of 1999). Murang'a is the capital of the county of the same name .
history
In colonial times the city was called Fort Hall. Coffee is mainly grown around Murang'a, and tea is also grown at higher altitudes. The residents are mostly Kikuyu .
Infrastructure
Murang'a has banks, gas stations, a post office, hotels and restaurants as well as several supermarkets and local marketplaces. There is a District General Hospital 500 m north of the city . The Thika Murang'a Road leads to Nyeri and Nairobi . There is a Matatu train station in the city center . The Cathedral of St. Heart of Jesus dates from 1902.
education
About 800 students attend the school and boarding school at Murang'a High School . This boys' school, one of the oldest in Kenya, is run by the Catholic Church. The Medical Training College one kilometer outside the city center dates from 1950, trains nurses and offers diplomas in clinical medicine.
