The Thomson Falls near town

Nyahururu is the highest town in Kenya at 2303  m . Nyahururu has been the capital of Nyandarua North District since a territorial reform in 2007, and is now in Laikipia County . The city had 32,120 inhabitants in 1999, of which 24,751 were in the actual city area.

Nyahururu was founded by the British colonial administration as Thomson's Falls . It was named after the Thomson waterfalls on the nearby Ewaso Narok River, which the Scottish geologist Joseph Thomson was the first European to document in 1888. A railway line from Gilgil opened in 1929 is now only used for goods. The road between Nyeri and Rumuruti runs through Nyahururu and there is a road to Nakuru .

Due to its height, Nyahururu is visited by Kenyan athletes for altitude training .
