Nakuru is the capital of Nakuru County in Kenya , was founded in 1904 and is the fourth largest city in the country with 570,674 inhabitants (2019 census). Nakuru is located at an altitude of about 1,860 meters above sea level at Lake Nakuru in the eastern part of the East African grave breach , even " Rift Valley called". The lake is world famous for its flamingos . The Maasai called the place En-Akuro: "swirling dust".
History and sights
In the colonial times, Nakuru was the main town of the so-called " White Highlands " for the settlers . Close to the city are Lake Nakuru National Park , Menengai Crater, and prehistoric Hyrax Hill .
The British architect Herbert Baker designed a school building built here for the children of European immigrants in the 1920s.
Transport and economy
The railway has an important station here; one line leads from the Kenyan capital Nairobi towards Eldoret (in Kenya) and to Uganda , a branch line leads to Kipkelion near Kisumu . Today the city is a center of agribusiness .

Nakuru belongs to the Nakuru diocese of the Roman Catholic Church . In 1928 the first Catholic mission opened in Nakuru. There are several Catholic churches in the city.
