history

The place was founded in 1901 under the name Port Florence as the end point of the Uganda Railway , which started in Mombasa on the Indian Ocean , where the goods were reloaded from the rail onto ships in order to transport them to Uganda . The name Port Florence is derived from the first name of the wife of the chief engineer of the railway line, Ronald Preston , who drove the last nail into the threshold of the track bed on December 19th when the railway line opened.

Since the completion of the direct rail connection to Uganda, which bypasses Kisumu, and the establishment of the East African individual states, the importance of the place as a trading and transshipment point has decreased significantly. A daily passenger train connection to Nairobi existed until 2013.

There is a friendship between cities with Cheltenham in Great Britain .

On January 17, 2013, six people died in a house collapse. 35 construction workers were injured and partially buried in the collapse of the building under construction. At the time of the accident, there were several street vendors and passers-by in front of the collapsed building. 23 people were rescued alive from the rubble shortly after the collapse.

economy

Kisumu is a trading center for agricultural goods in the area and their processed products. This mainly includes sugar production, fishing and the textile industry. Kenya Breweries has a large brewery here. The formerly huge rice plantations in the vicinity of the city have been fallow for years.

Several ferries go from the port of the city across Lake Victoria, also to Tanzania and Uganda . The Kisumu airport is located three kilometers west of the city.

Culture

Grace Ogot , the first woman writer in Africa and arguably the most important author in East Africa, was born on May 15, 1930 in Asembo near Kisumu. Ogot wrote novels and short stories in English and Luo , her mother tongue.

The Kisumu Museum has existed since 1980, presenting historical exhibits from the region as well as biological exhibits. The city is also home to a tiny zoo on the lakeshore, the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary . The airport connects the city daily with the capital Nairobi and other cities.

Facilities

In Kisumu, the HIV rate is 34 percent, the highest in Kenya. One third of the country's AIDS orphans live in this province of Nyanza. Kisumu is the seat of a Catholic archdiocese . An Apostolic Prefecture Kavirondo was established on July 15, 1925 and converted into a Vicariate Apostolic on May 27, 1932 . The first bishop was Gorgonius Brandsma from the Netherlands. On March 25, 1953, the vicariate was transformed into the diocese of Kisumu, which was eventually raised to an archdiocese after the diocese of Kakamega had previously been separated. The archbishopric was then created on May 21, 1990. The dioceses of Bungoma , Eldoret , Homa Bay , Kakamega , Kisii , Kitale and Lodwar are subordinate to him . Zacchaeus Okoth has been Archbishop since 1990 .
