The Menengai crater ( Maa : "place of corpses") is the sixth largest volcanic crater in the world at an altitude of 2278 m . It is located in Kenya near Nakuru .
The dormant volcano is actually a caldera . Small clouds of smoke can be observed again and again. The caldera has a diameter of 12 km. From the crater rim, which can be reached on foot, the slope plunges almost 500 m down to the confusing crater floor, which is now a nature reserve. The name of the crater has its origins in a bloody battle between two Maasai clans in 1854, in which hundreds of repulsed attackers fell to their deaths over the slope.
The visitor has a wide view over the country from above.
