Meru (people)

The Meru , or Ameru , are a Bantu ethnic group that mainly inhabit the Meru region of Kenya .

They speak the language Kimîîru ( Kimeru ) as their mother tongue. However, many Meru are adopting the national official language of English, which has been used as a second language since the British colonial era , as their mother tongue.

They traditionally have their own East African religion, but since the colonial times many Meru have been converted to different denominations of Christianity. Related ethnic groups are the Kikuyu and the Embu .

The Meru of Kenya say that before they settled in what is now their homeland, they had to come from the far north: ruteere rwa urio . Njuri Ncheke's spokesman, ex-chief M'Muraa M'Kairanyi, stated that they were all originally immigrated from Misiri, Egypt .
