Meru is the capital of Meru County in Kenya and was the capital of Meru Central District until the 2010 local government reform . In 1999 there were 42,677 people in the city.

Meru is located on the Katitha River, on the northeastern foothills of Mount Kenya . It is located about 8 km north of the equator at an altitude of 1581 m in an area with mixed forest, fallow land, small villages, towns and farmland. The area is mainly inhabited by the Meru .

The city can be reached via a paved road, either from the south along the east side of Mount Kenya, via Embu or from the northwest via the west and north flanks of Mount Kenya, via Nanyuki and Timau.

The city of Meru is an economic, agricultural and training center for the whole of northeast Kenya. There are elementary and secondary schools, including Meru High School and Kaaga Girls School. There is also the main campus of Kenya Methodist University , the Meru University College of Science and Technology, the Meru Technical Training Institute and the Meru Teachers Training College.

The area is an important location for coffee production. In Meru, coffee can be harvested twice a year due to the double rainy season due to the proximity to the equator. The area is largely in the hands of cooperatives with their own coffee factories. Meru is also a main growing area for Miraa (Kath).
