Meru County (until 2010 Meru District ) is a county in Kenya . In 2019 Meru County lived 1,545,714 people on 6,936 km². The capital is Meru . Meru borders 4 other counties; Isiolo County to the north, Nyeri County to the southwest, Tharaka-Nithi County to the southwest, and Laikipia County to the west. Meru County consists of nine constituencies; Igembe South, Igembe Central, Igembe North, Tigania West, Tigania East, North Imenti, Buuri, Imenti Central and Imenti South.

climate

The climate in Meru can be described as mild to warm. The temperature fluctuates between 16 ° C in the cold season to 23 ° C in the warm season. Meru receives an average rainfall between 500 mm and 2600 mm per year.

population

The majority of the population belongs to the Meru people . These include the sub-tribes of the Imenti , Tigania and Igembe , who are resident here. Kimeru is the language spoken by this community , along with Swahili and English . Other ethnic groups are the Kikuyu , Embu and Kamba . There are also smaller groups of Borana , Somali , Asians and whites.

Meru County is mainly populated by Christians . Although there are Catholic, Presbyterian, and Anglican believers, the Methodist Church has the largest following in the region. Minority religions are Islam and Hinduism .

In 2014 the fertility rate was 3.1 children per woman. The literacy rate was 86.1% for women and 90.4% for men between the ages of 15 and 49.

economy

The inhabitants of the county live mainly from agriculture . Most people practice subsistence farming where they grow common foods like corn , beans , sorghum , millet, and fruit . Others grow coffee and tea and have it processed in nearby factories. Commercial fruit growing by the Project Nurture the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has become popular. Mainly mangoes and passion fruits are grown .

In 2017, the county's GDP per capita was 154,537 Kenya Shillings (around 3,086 international dollars ), making it 19th among the 47 counties in the country.
