Kilifi County (until 2010 Kilifi District ) is a county in Kenya . The county's capital is Kilifi . In Kilifi County 1,453,787 people (2019) live on 12,245.9 km².

Kilifi County is located north / northeast of Mombasa and is divided into seven divisions and three constituencies. The constituencies are Bahari, Whole, and Kaloleni.

Religion and ethnicities

The main ethnic groups living in Kilifi are grouped together as Mijikenda . The majority are Muslims and Christians; there are also some followers of African religions and a small number of Hindus . The rituals of the magical healers (Swahili mganga , plural waganga ) are firmly anchored in the culture of the Mijikenda . You will be asked for help in diagnosing illnesses and other problems. The obsession dances ( ngoma za pepo ) listed in the Pepo cult belong to the magical practices .

In addition to the national language Kiswahili , Mijikenda languages ​​are spoken.

Ruin site

Several ruins remain in Kilifi County from the time of the pre-colonial Arab trading posts. Immediately south of the city of Kilifi lies the ruins of Mnarani , consisting of the remains of a Swahili settlement from the 14th century. Remains of the 15th and 16th centuries remained three kilometers to the south. Kitoka was a flourishing settlement in the 19th century. Two other well-known ruins are Gedi in the north of the county and Jumba la Mtwana in the south from the 14th century.
