Kakamega County (until 2010 Kakamega District ) is a county in Kenya . The county's capital is Kakamega . The Kakamega Forest National Reserve , the last rainforest in Kenya, is located in the county .
structure
Kakamega County is divided into seven divisions. There are nine constituencies: Malava, Lugari, Mumias, Matungu, Lurambi, Shinyalu, Ikolomani, Butere, and Khwisero. Under the 2010 constitution , the districts of Kakamega Central, Kakamega North, Kakamega East, Kakamega South, Lugari and Mumias were merged under the new name of Kakamega County .

economy
In addition to raising livestock, the people of Kakamega County make a living from agriculture. The main crops are sugar cane , tea , sunflowers and soybeans for sale, corn , sweet potatoes , beans and plantains for personal use. Furthermore, avocado , papaya , banana and pineapple grown. Livestock farming consists mainly of cattle and poultry farming. In 2002 just under 57.5% of the population lived below the poverty line .
Education and Healthcare
There are several primary and secondary schools in the county . The drop-out rate in 1999 was quite high at 26% in primary and 5.3% in secondary school. The reasons given for dropping out of primary school are the school fees that many parents cannot pay, as well as the fact that many children are orphaned and drop out of school to look after younger siblings. In secondary school, the reasons for premature termination of education are mostly early pregnancies and / or early marriage.
The county has 55 health care facilities. Child mortality is quite high at 6.3%; 12.25% of children die before their 5th birthday. Kakamega County also has one of the highest HIV / AIDS rates in Kenya. The prevalence is 23.8%.
