Nairobi County is a county in Kenya . It is congruent with the city of Nairobi and had the status of a province until 2013. In 2019, 4,397,073 people lived in Nairobi County on 704 km². This makes it the smallest and most populous county in the country. Together with the counties of Kiambu , Murang'a , Kajiado and Machakos , it forms the metropolitan region of Nairobi with around 10 million inhabitants.

Due to immigration from all over the country, Nairobi is experiencing rapid growth as an urban center. That is why ethnic groups from all over Kenya as well as smaller minorities of Asian, Arab and European descent live in Nairobi. Christians form the largest religious group, followed by Muslims .

In terms of socio-economic development, Nairobi is way ahead of the rest of the country. In 2014 the fertility rate was 2.7 children per woman. The literacy rate was 96.5% for women and 98.6% for men between the ages of 15 and 49.

Nairobi is an important economic center in Kenya and East Africa and provides approx. 20% of the total economic output of the country and a large part of the industrial production.

In 2017, the county's GDP per capita was 317,700 Kenya Shillings (approx. 6,344 international dollars ), making it 3rd among the 47 counties in the country.
