Migori County (until 2010 Migori District ) is a county in Kenya . The county capital is Migori . In 2019, the county had 1,116,436 people on 2586.4 km². 58% of the population lived below the poverty line in 2000.

structure

Migori County is divided into eight divisions: Uriri, Rongo, Awendo, Nyatike, Karungu, Muhuru, Suba East and Suba West. There are five constituencies: Rongo, Migori, Uriri, Nyatike, and Kuria. Under the 2010 constitution , the Kuria East, Kuria West, Migori, and Rongo districts were merged under the new name of Migori County .

economy

Most of the people in Migori County make a living from agriculture. Mainly corn , sugar cane , cassava and tobacco are grown. Lake Victoria , which borders the county, enables fishing and fish processing. There are also gold and copper mines in Migori County .

education

In 2005 Migori County had 410 primary schools and 44 secondary schools . The school enrollment rate was 91%.

Healthcare

The county has five hospitals and six health centers. There are 52,200 patients for one doctor. It mainly treats malaria , respiratory infections, and diarrheal diseases. The HIV - prevalence is about 30% among the highest in the province of Nyanza. In the county's hospitals, an average of 60% of patients are HIV-positive or have AIDS . In 1999 an average of 36 people died in hospitals every month, in 2000 48 people and in 2005 over 60 people died of HIV / AIDS-related diseases. Infant mortality in 2000 was 13.7%, 21.3% of children die before their 5th birthday.
