Wajir County (until 2010 Wajir District ) is a county in Kenya . The county's capital is Wajir . In 2019, 781,263 people lived on 55,840.6 km² in the county. The county borders Ethiopia in the north . The county has an arid climate . Most of the soil is very stony, but there is fertile clay soil in the north. 30% of the area is arable . The people of Wajir County live mainly from nomadic livestock farming. Only 40% of the population has access to safe water sources, the average distance to be traveled to the nearest source is 15 km. In 2005, more than two thirds of the population lived below the poverty line .
Transport and infrastructure
The county's road network is in poor condition. Only 7% of the roads are paved and many roads are impassable during the rainy season. Electricity is only available in the capital, Wajir . In 2002 the county had 45 phone boxes, 3 post offices, and 1 bank. Medical care in Wajir County is poor. In 2002 the county had 1 hospital, 4 outpatient departments, and 25 pharmacies. An average of 70 km had to be traveled to a medical care center. Almost 80% of households had no access to medical care. In Wajir County often leads to malaria - and diarrhea - epidemics . In 2002, 9.8% of the children died before their 5th birthday.
