The Elgeyo-Marakwet County (abbreviated: EMC) is one of 47 Kenyan counties in the western part of the country. Its capital and largest city with 42,000 inhabitants is Iten . The district was established on March 4, 2013 and is part of the former Rift Valley Province . It is bordered to the north by West Pokot County , to the east, southeast and south by Baringo County , to the southwest and west by Uasin Gishu County and to the northwest by Trans-Nzoia County . The northern part of Marakwet County is divided into West and East Marakwet, the southern part into North and South Keiyo.

Elgeyo-Marakwet County is roughly at the level of the equator and therefore in the tropical climate zone. So there are no seasons. Temperatures vary on average between a minimum of 14 ° C and a maximum of 24 ° C. Every year, between 400 and 1400 mm of precipitation fall per square meter.
population
Elgeyo-Marakwet County has 370,000 inhabitants (according to the 2009 census; projection for 2016: 446,000), which corresponds to around 1 percent of the total Kenyan population (38.6 million). The annual population growth is 2.7-2.8 percent, the population density is 122 people per square kilometer (area 3,030 km²). The county has a very young population: 46 percent are under 15 years old and only 4 percent are over 65 years old.

The doctor-to-population ratio is 1: 50,000 in Marakwet and 1: 156,000 in southern Keiyo. The infant mortality rate is 5.7 percent. There are 113 district hospitals and five sub-district hospitals in the county. There are also 89 pharmacies (dispensaries), 15 health centers (medical centers) and one clinic (medical clinics). The predominant diseases are malaria, diarrhea, bronchopneumonia and infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract infections.
Economy and Social
57 percent of the county's residents live below the poverty line (according to values included in the Human Development Index (HDI)). The Kenyan average is 46 percent. Poverty is distributed differently across regions in Elgeyo-Marakwet County. While the rate in the hill country and the Kerio Valley is 67 percent, it is lower in the highlands, at 47 percent.
The people practice livestock and subsistence farming. There are mostly small companies. The country has iron ore and copper as mineral resources.
Schools and training
The county has 373 elementary schools with 110,000 primary schools and 75 secondary schools with 21,000 students. There is a school for teacher training (Teacher Training College) and three technical training facilities for young people (Youth Polytechnics).
Political structure
The County Elgeyo-Marakwet has four constituencies ( constituencies , including divisions or sub-counties ) with 20 constituencies ( wards ) and 186 sub-districts ( sub-locations ): In the north Marakwet East and Marakwet West , in the south Keiyo North and Keiyo South . All elected constituency representatives belong to the URP party and thus to the Jubilee coalition (as of October 2016).
