Antonio Ranieri (born September 8, 1806 in Naples , † January 4, 1888 in Portici ) was an Italian writer , historian and politician . He is best known for his friendship with the poet Giacomo Leopardi , whose estate he managed.

Life

Antonio Ranieri was anti-Bourbon and was persecuted because of his liberal political views, which is why he stayed abroad for a long time, in Tuscany , France and Great Britain . In June 1828 he met Giacomo Leopardi, with whom he became friends and lived together from 1830, with a one-year break, until Leopardi's early death. Initially, the two rented an apartment in Florence, later in Rome, and from 1833 onwards they finally stayed in Ranieri's homeland, Naples. After Leopardi's death, he saved his body from being buried in a communal grave for the poor, and upheld his memory by publishing his works and writing a short biography. Ranieri later wrote inflammatory novels such as Ginevra o l'Orfanella della Nunziata , which earned him some time in prison, and a history of Italy in the early Middle Ages, in which he blamed the worldly power of the popes for Italy's misfortunes. As a result of the revolution of 1848 , he was elected to the Napoletan parliament. In 1861 he was delegated to the Parliament of the Kingdom of Italy and was re-elected several times there until 1881. In 1882 he was appointed senator . He was also a professor of philosophy of history at the University of Naples .
