Viola Jelagat Kibiwot (also Viola Chelagat Kibiwot ; born December 22, 1983 in Elgeyo-Marakwet County ) is a Kenyan middle and long distance runner .

Life

Kibiwot finished third in the junior women's race at the World Cross Country Championships in Vilamoura in 2000 . In 2001 in Oostende and 2002 in Dublin she was both junior world champion. At the World Junior Athletics Championships in Kingston in 2002 , she won the gold medal in the 1,500-meter run .

Kibiwot was initially unable to achieve comparable success in the adult sector. At the 2003 World Cross Country Championships in Lausanne, she took 22nd place on the short distance and 23rd place in Saint-Galmier in 2005 . At times she achieved better results on the track. In the 1500 meter run she was sixth at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, fifth at the 2007 World Athletics Championships in Osaka and fourth at the 2007 World Athletics Finals in Stuttgart. At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009 , however, she could not qualify for the final. At the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi, she finished seventh.

Kibiwot finally won her first international medal in the adult category at the African Cross Country Championships in Cape Town in 2011 , where she came second behind her compatriot Mercy Cherono .
