The 19th Commonwealth Games took place from October 3rd to 14th, 2010 in the Indian city of Delhi . It was the biggest sporting event ever held in India. Delhi previously hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982 . 272 competitions in 17 sports were held. The preparations were overshadowed by various organizational problems and in some cases met with heavy criticism in the media.

canditature

Two cities had applied to host the Commonwealth Games 2010, in addition to the Indian city of Delhi, Hamilton in Canada . The members of the Commonwealth Games Federation led in November 2003 at its General Assembly in Montego Bay ( Jamaica by a secret ballot). Delhi won the bid with 46 to 22 votes.

Sports facilities

The sporting competitions were held at twelve different locations in Delhi. The main venue was the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium , which opened in 1983 (opening and closing ceremonies, athletics). The following existing sports facilities were used: CRPF Shooting Range (shooting), SPM Swimming Pool Complex (water sports), Dhyan Chand National Stadium (hockey), RK Khanna Tennis Complex (tennis) and Talkatora Stadium (boxing). With a view to the Commonwealth Games, the following were newly built: Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex (bowls, weightlifting), Delhi University Stadium (7-a-side rugby), Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range (shooting), Indira Gandhi Arena (cycling, gymnastics, wrestling), Siri Fort Sports Complex (badminton, squash), Thyagaraj Sports Complex (netball) and Yamuna Sports Complex (archery, table tennis). In addition, 20 training facilities and an athletes' village were available to the athletes.

participating countries

Fiji is suspended as a member of the Commonwealth and for this reason excluded from participation in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Rwanda has participated with a team for the first time since the country joined the Commonwealth in 2009.

criticism

In the run-up to the games, the condition of the sports facilities was criticized, as was the security situation. Accordingly, many of the homes for the athletes are in an uninhabitable state. An attack on a tour bus, in which several people were injured, as well as collapsing bridges and stadium ceilings increased the pressure on the Indian government. Experts also feared the spread of dengue fever . Prominent athletes such as British triple jumper Phillips Idowu and Australian discus world champion Dani Samuels canceled their participation due to safety concerns.

During the Games, several participants developed a viral gastrointestinal infection. Because the first cases occurred among swimmers, the quality of the water came under suspicion. But after the English field hockey team also reported cases of illness and an examination of the water did not reveal any pathogen, the cause remained unclear.
