The 1st Asian Games took place in New Delhi from March 4th to 11th .

489 athletes from eleven different member associations of the Olympic Council of Asia took part. The motto of the games was "Play the game, in the spirit of the game" . 57 competitions in eight sports were held. The Games were opened by Rajendra Prasad , the first President of India . They were played at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi .

The official logo of the games shows a red sun with 16 rays with a white circle in the middle, which is still the logo of the Asian Games today, and under this sun 11 rings, which stood for the participating nations and should symbolize peace.

The next Asian Games to be held in India were the 1982 Asian Games . They took place 31 years later.
