The 3rd Asian Games took place in Tokyo from May 24th to June 1st, 1958 .

1,820 athletes from 20 different member associations of the Olympic Council of Asia took part. 112 competitions in 13 sports were held. The games were opened by Emperor Hirohito , the then Tennō of Japan. The games were held in the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo .

At the Asian Games in 1958, four new sports were added. These were: hockey , tennis , table tennis and volleyball .

The next major event in Tokyo was the 1964 Summer Olympics .

Participating Nations

In 1958 all countries took part that had already participated in 1954 , as well as Iran and Nepal , which paused at the last Asian Games.
