The 15th Asian Games took place from December 1st to 15th, 2006 in Doha . Doha was the first city in Arabia , and after Tehran in 1974 only the second in the Middle East to host the Asian Games. For the first time, over 10,500 athletes from 45 nations took part, and more than 1,350 medals were awarded in 39 sports.

Allocation of the games

There were four applicants to host the 2006 Asian Games: Doha ( Qatar ), Hong Kong ( China ), Kuala Lumpur ( Malaysia ) and New Delhi ( India ). On November 12, 2000, the election took place in Busan , the host of the 2002 Asian Games . All 41 members of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) were entitled to vote . The election consisted of a maximum of three ballots (without a runoff). If there was no absolute majority for a candidate in a ballot, the last one was kicked out and the election was continued. In the first ballot, New Delhi only received two votes and was eliminated. In the second ballot there was an absolute majority for Doha with 22 votes, Kuala Lumpur received 13 and Hong Kong 6 votes.

Participating Nations

All 45 OCA members took part in the 2006 Asian Games. The largest delegation was South Korea with 656 athletes, closely followed by China with 647. The smallest team was that of Brunei with only seven participants.

China was by far the most successful nation with 165 gold medals and a total of 316 medals. The result of the last games in 2002 could be surpassed, but the own record of 183 gold medals at the Asian Games in 1990 could not be reached. The second best nation was South Korea, which won over 100 fewer gold medals. A total of 38 nations were able to win medals and thus perpetuate themselves in the medal table.
