At the 2006 Asian Games in Qatar , two football competitions were held from November 18 to December 15, 2006 . 28 teams took part in the men's tournament and 8 teams in the women's tournament. The games were not only played in Doha , but also in the surrounding cities of ar-Rayyan and al-Wakra .

As since the 2002 tournament in Busan, only U-23 teams were admitted to the men , who could be reinforced with a maximum of three older athletes. This restriction did not apply to women.

The hosts from Qatar won the men's tournament with a 1-0 victory in the final against Iraq . In the bronze medal match, Iran beat South Korea 1-0 after extra time . In the women's category, North Korea won the final against Japan 4-2 on penalties . China secured the bronze medal with a 2-0 win over South Korea .

Venues

The games were played in seven different stadiums in Qatar . The two finals took place in Doha in the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium (men) and in the Qatar SC Stadium (women).

Men's tournament

Attendees

A new record was set with a total of 28 teams. Of the participants in 2002, only four teams were missing: Afghanistan, Yemen, Lebanon and Turkmenistan. Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Macau, Singapore, Syria and Tajikistan were represented for the first time by a U-23 team.

The eight teams that did not take part in the soccer tournament of the Asian Games in 2002 had to play against each other in a preliminary round for the remaining two (later four) places in the main round. The draw took place on September 7, 2006.

1Yemen and Turkmenistan withdrew from the competition in mid-November 2006. They were replaced by the two runners-up in the preliminary round.

Preliminary round

Originally, only the two group winners should qualify for the main round. But as Yemen and Turkmenistan withdrew, the two runners-up also moved up into the main round. After Iran was suspended by FIFA , the top third in the group, Tajikistan, also qualified for the main round. However, FIFA allowed an exception so that Iran could still participate.
