Olympic games

Of the four major events of relevance for U-23 teams, the football tournament at the Olympic Games , which began in 1992, is the only competition for which the team from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has not yet qualified.

Asian Championships

At the Asian Championships , the North Korean U-23 team were eliminated twice in the first round and reached the quarter-finals for the first time and so far in 2016. On the way to this success, the team prevailed in qualifying in Group G - the games all took place in the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok ( Thailand ) - due to the better goal difference than group winners before Thailand. At the tournament itself, the team in Group B met Japan, Saudi Arabia and again Thailand and just qualified as second in the group for the qualifying games. In the knockout game of the quarterfinals, Qatar prevailed 2-1 after extra time.

Asian Games

The rate at the Asian Games is much better : With five appearances, there are four entries into the quarter-finals. In the 2014 edition , the team reached the final for the first time, in which the direct neighbor from South Korea prevailed. 29 teams took part in the group stage, so that North Korea was drawn into one of the three groups of three ( F ) in which games against China and Pakistan were due. With two wins without conceding, the team qualified for the quarter-finals, in which the United Arab Emirates were defeated 1-0. In the semifinals, North Korea finally prevailed 1-0 after extra time against Iraq, but then lost the final also after extra time with the same result against South Korea.

East Asian Games

At the East Asian Games, the North Koreans' junior team finally explored the extremes: While it did not qualify for the 2001 edition, it then came second or fourth, and then triumphed in the 2013 edition . The games were all played in Tianjin between October 6th and 14th in a group of five participants, which in addition to North Korea also included South Korea, China, Hong Kong and Japan. With a total of 10 points - through three wins and one draw against South Korea - North Korea prevailed as group first ahead of South Korea and Japan, who each scored seven points.
