At the Asian Games 2002 in South Korea from September 27 to October 13, 2002, two football competitions were held. 26 teams took part in the men's tournament, six teams in the women's tournament. The games were not only played in Busan , but also in the surrounding cities of Changwon , Ulsan and Yangsan .

For the first time, as in the Olympic soccer tournament, only U-23 teams were allowed to join, and they could be reinforced with a maximum of three older athletes. This restriction did not apply to women.

Iran won the men's tournament with a 2-1 win in the final against Japan . In the match for bronze, the hosts from South Korea beat Thailand 3-0 . In the women's category, North Korea won the round-robin tournament ahead of China and Japan .

Venues

The games were played in six different stadiums in South Korea . The men's final took place in Busan in the Asia Main Stadium.

Attendees

A new record was set with a total of 24 teams. Of the 1998 participants , only six teams were missing: Cambodia, Kazakhstan (switched to UEFA in 2002 ), Laos, Mongolia, Nepal and Tajikistan. Again there were Afghanistan (last time 1954), Bahrain (last time 1994), Bangladesh (last time 1990), Yemen (last time 1994), Malaysia (last time 1994), Pakistan (last time 1990) and Palestine (last time 1994).

Remarks

1Jordan and Mongolia withdrew from the competition. They have been replaced by Palestine and Afghanistan .
2Tajikistan was suspended by FIFA and replaced by North Korea .

Group stage

The group winners and the two best runners-up qualified for the quarter-finals, the remaining second, third and fourth placed were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied, the placement was determined by the following criteria:

  4. Goal difference in direct comparison
  5. Number of goals in direct comparison
  6. Drawing of lots

Women's tournament
