Ulsan is a city in southeastern South Korea . The city is located on the Sea of Japan , about 70 kilometers northeast of Busan . 962,931 people live in the actual city, and 1,105,823 in the entire city province, which also includes a district. Ulsan is a university town with the University of Ulsan and is politically independent from the Gyeongsangnam-do province in which it is located.

economy
The city is the heart of the industrial zone of the same name, which is also home to the international Hyundai Group . Until 1962, Ulsan was primarily a sea port and marketplace for fishery products.
In 1962, Ulsan became an open port as part of South Korea's first five-year plan. In the same year, the port of Pangojin also became part of the city. Large industries were also established, particularly oil refineries , fertilizer factories, automobile manufacturing, and heavy industry . Today (2012) the world's largest container ships are being built at Hyundai Heavy Industries .
According to a report by Reuters news agency , Ulsan is the city in South Korea with the highest per capita income .

Naval battle at Ulsan
During the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), on August 14, 1904, four days after the Russian defeat in the sea battle in the Yellow Sea , the sea battle at Ulsan , also known as the "sea battle in the Sea of Japan", took place between two armored cruiser squadrons which also ended in a Japanese victory.
