Jeollanam-do (South Jeolla) is a province in the southwest of South Korea . It is bordered by Jeollabuk-do to the north and Gyeongsangnam-do to the east . The province is bounded in the south by the Korea Strait and in the west by the Yellow Sea . Jeollanam-do was created in 1896 when the former province of Jeolla-do was divided . The administrative center was moved from the independent city of Gwangju to Muan County in 2005.
geography
Almost 2000 islands are scattered along the south coast in Jeollanam-do, around three quarters of which are uninhabited. The length of the coast is about 6,400 kilometers. There is a mild and humid climate with an annual rainfall of about 1400 mm.
Jeollanam-do has three national parks and four nature parks administered by the province and attracts many holidaymakers due to its coastal location and pleasant climate.
economy
Oyster catching and seaweed production in Jeollanam-do are leading in South Korea . The province is only partly mountainous. The plains of the Somjin , Yeongsan, and Tamjin Rivers are ideal for growing crops. The humid climate allows the cultivation of rice , wheat , barley and lentils ; potatoes , vegetables , fruits such as Naju pears and cotton are also important.
Some gold and coal are mined in Jeollanam-do, but industry in the province is developed. In Daebul on the southwestern tip of the peninsula, a new industrial complex, the proximity to China (arises Shanghai ) and Taiwan should benefit.
