Jindo ( Kor.  진도 , Hanja  珍 島 ) is an inhabited island in the Yellow Sea and the name of the district of the same name . The area of ​​the island is 363.16 km². In 2010, 36,329 people lived here.

It is the third largest island in South Korea and belongs to Jindo-gun County in Jeollanam-do Province at the southwest end of the Korean peninsula . The island has been called Jindo since 1001. In 1597 the naval battle of Myongnyang (Imjin War) was decided off the coast .

The Jindo Bridge has been connecting the island to the mainland since October 18, 1984 . The bridge has a span of 484 meters. The largest settlement on the island is the small town of Jindo-eup ( 진도읍 ) with 10,723 inhabitants. On the southwest coast of the island is the port of Paengmok-hang ( kleiner 목항 ), which was a small fishing port until it was expanded in 2013. In the future it will also serve as a port for cruise ships .

On April 16, 2014, the Sewol ferry turned off Jindo-gun's Byeongpungdo Island ( 병풍도 ) and began to sink some time afterwards. The scene of the accident is 20 km from Paengmok-hang .

The Korea Jindo Dog was named after the island and is bred as a purebred dog breed on the island.
