Location of Sinan-gun

Sinan ( Sinan-gun , 신안군 ) is a South Korean district in Jeollanam-do Province (South Jeolla) in the extreme southwest of the country. The district consists of 111 inhabited and 719 uninhabited islands. 25% of all islands of South Korea are located in this district. They lie on the continental shelf , which is less than 15 meters below sea level, and partly in the Wadden Sea .

On the English-language homepage of the county, the name is translated from Korean as Shinan .

economy

Sinan County is known for its specialties such as rays and cheonilyeom (천일염), a Korean type of sea ​​salt produced in Sinan 's salt flats . In 2014, several cases of slavery were discovered on the salt farms.

On the fields of the islands u. a. Rice, chilli, mung beans, sesame seeds, soybeans and sweet potatoes are grown. However, the young generation is leaving their home region on a large scale.

The tourism that is still expandable is currently mainly limited to the northern part of the archipelago.

traffic

The inhabited islands are connected by ferry connections with the South Korean port city of Mokpo on the mainland. At the end of 2018, the new "Millennium Bridge" should go into operation, which will connect several islands of Sinan, including Anjwa-do, to the mainland.
