Dochodo ( Korean 도초도 ) is an island in Sinan-gun County ( 신안군 ) in Jeollanam-do Province ( 전라남도 ) in southwest South Korea .
geography
The island is located around 36 km west-southwest of Mokpo ( 목포시 ) and around 90 km southwest of Gwangju ( 광주 ) and is one of the 827 islands that lie off the south-west coast of South Korea. North of Dochodo is separate by approximately 510 m wide strait, but connected by a bridge pad Bigeumdo ( 비금도 ). In the west is the neighboring islands, Anjwado ( 안좌도 ), about 6 km away and in the south the archipelago of the rural community Haeumi-Myon ( 하의면 ), with the islands Daeyado ( 대야 도 ), Neungsando ( 능산 도 ), Kkaedo ( 깨 도 ) , Haeuido ( 하의도 ), to name only the closest ones . The island of Uido ( 우이도 ) can be found around 8 km to the southwest .
Dochodo has an almost square shape, with a length of around 9 km in east-west direction and a maximum width of around 8.9 km in north-south direction. With the mountains Keunsan, 264 m , Geumsungsan ( 금 성산 ), 211 m and Yongdangsan ( 용 당산 ), 206 m the island rises out of the sea. Slightly more than half of the area of the island consists of a flat land criss-crossed with many canals, which is interrupted like a patchwork with numerous mountains between around 40 m and a maximum of 264 m high, sometimes steeply rising.
The island can be reached by ferry from Mokpo, which docks at the ferry dock near Seonammun Bridge ( 서 남문 남문 ), which connects the two islands of Bigeumdo and Dochodo. Another ship connection is via the pier in the southeast of the island.
Administrative structure
The island is administratively organized together with the inhabited southwest lying island of Uido ( 우이도 ) in the rural community of Docho-myeon ( 도초면 ), which together with the rural communities of the other islands in the region of the district of Sinan-gun, which belongs to the province of Jeollanam-do , is managed.
history
Salt production through the evaporation of sea water under the action of the sun and wind was first practiced in 1946 on the neighboring island of Bigeumdo, when the salt workers' park Sam-man ( 박삼만 ), which was put to work by the Japanese occupiers during the annexation of Korea by Japan the salt pans of the province of Pyeongannam-do ( 남도 남도 , today North Korea), came back to his home island after the liberation of Korea in 1945 to start with the salt production. From there, salt production developed in the region and has also been practiced in suitable bays of Dochodo since those days.
economy
The islanders prefer to live from agriculture, which is practiced in the lowlands between the mountains, and from the sea salt production in the salt pans in the north, northeast and east of the island. Fishing is only carried out for personal use. Several water reservoirs that have been built on the island at the foot of some mountains cover the island's drinking water and industrial water supplies.
Dadohaehaesang National Park
The island of Dochodo, which is surrounded by the Wadden Sea, is located in the middle of the Dadohaehaesang National Park ( 다도해 해상 국립 공원 ), which includes the entire Wadden Sea on the southwest coast of South Korea. Also counts the island to that of the UNESCO -recognized biosphere reserve , Shinan Dadohae ( 신안 다도해 ) includes part of the district of Sinan-gun.
