The L-shaped island, which has a length of around 12.4 km and a maximum width of around 7.3 km, rises up to 255  with Mount Seosan ( 서산 ), which is located in the western part of the island m up from the sea.

The island can be reached by ferry from Mokpo, which docks at the only ferry pier in Bigeumdo, which is located on the extreme southeastern tip of the island. From there, highway 805 leads along the island's salt flats to the southwest side, from where the Seonammun Bridge ( 서 남문 대교 ) provides the road connection to the neighboring island of Dochodo.

Administrative structure

The island is administratively organized together with three smaller islands to the east in the rural municipality of Bigeum-myeon ( 비금면 ), which is administered together with the rural municipalities of the other islands in the region of Sinan-gun County, which belongs to Jeollanam-do Province.

history

Salt production through the evaporation of sea water under the action of the sun and wind was first practiced on the island of Bigeumdo in 1946 when the Sam-man ( 박삼만 ) saltworks park , which was used by the Japanese occupiers to work in during the annexation of Korea by Japan was forcibly recruited from the salt pans of Pyeongannam-do Province ( 평안 남도 ) (now North Korea), came back to his home island after the liberation of Korea in 1945 to begin salt production. Since then, sea salt extraction has been an essential part of life on the island.

economy

The islanders prefer to live from agriculture, which is carried out on the north side of the island and between the mountains on the south-west side, and from sea salt production in the salt flats on the south side of the island. Fishing is only carried out for personal use. Four water reservoirs , three in the mountains of the western part of the island and one in the mountains in the eastern part of the island, cover the island's drinking water and industrial water supplies.

Dadohaehaesang National Park

The island of Bigeumdo, surrounded by the Wadden Sea, is located in the middle of the Dadohaehaesang National Park ( 다도해 해상 국립 공원 ), which includes the entire Wadden Sea on the southwest coast of South Korea. Also counts the island to that of the UNESCO -recognized biosphere reserve , Shinan Dadohae ( 신안 다도해 ) includes part of the district of Sinan-gun.
