The Dadohaehaesang National Park ( Korean 다도해 해상 국립 공원 ) is one of 22 national parks in South Korea , and his area of the largest of its kind in the country.
geography
Dadohaehaesang National Park is located on the southern to southwestern coastline of Jeollanam-do Province ( 전라남도 ), in the southwest of the Korean peninsula . The park consists of seven districts, which together cover an area of 2321.2 km 2 . With 334.8 km 2 , the land area of all islands and coastlines in the national park makes up around one seventh of its total area. The area of the sea portion is 1990.4 km 2 . To the east is the area of the Hallyeohaesang National Park and in the west the borders with some islands intersect with the Shinan Dadohae Biosphere Reserve ( 신안 다도해 ).
Like the Hallyeohaesang National Park, the park does not consist of a contiguous area, like most national parks on land, but comprises selected islands and coastal sections at various locations on the southern and southwestern coast:
Heuksando Hongdo District
This part of the national park is the westernmost and starts around 80 km west of Mokpo. It includes the island of Hongdo ( 홍도 ) and the island group of Heuksando ( 흑산도 ) with the islands of Daeheuksando ( 대 흑산도 ), Daedundo ( 대둔 도 ), Yeongsando ( 영산 도 ) and Daejando ( 대잔 도 ), just to add the larger ones to the group call.
Bigeumdo Dochodo district
Also west of Mokpo, 35 km away, is the part with the large islands of Bigeumdo , Dochodo and Uido . Around each of these islands there are further smaller islands, also rock islands, which are counted with the district.
Jodo District
The Jodo district begins about 52 km southwest of Mokpo and expands to the southwest. The district includes the islands of Hajodo ( 하조도 ), Sangjodo ( 상조도 ), Gwanmaedo ( 관매도 ), a very small southwestern part of the island of Jindo ( 진도 ), the largest island in this area and many smaller islands and archipelagos. Proportionally, this part makes up most of the islands in the park.
Soando Cheongsando District
This part of the national park is the largest in terms of area and includes the islands of Bogildo ( 보길도 ), Soando ( 소안도 ), Modo ( 모도 ), Cheongsando ( 청산도 ) and the southwestern part of Sinjido Island ( 신지도 ). It is located around 65 km south-southeast of Mokpo.
Geomundo Baekdo District
This district is located around 70 km south-southwest of Yeosu ( 여수시 ) around 90 km south of Suncheon ( 순천시 ). The islands include Seodo ( 서도 ), Dongdo ( 동도 ) and Godo ( 고도 ) of the Geomundo ( 거문도 ) archipelago , the east bordering islands Sosambudo ( 소 삼부도 ) and Daesambudo ( 대 삼부도 ) and two smaller archipelagos 25 km east as well as a small one Island 20 km northeast of Geomundo.
Narado District
This part is also located southwest of Yeosu and south of Suncheon, but with a distance of around 30 km and around 45 km, it is closer to the mainland. The island of Oenarodo ( 외나로도 ), a small part of the southern coast of the island of Naenarado ( 내나 로 도 ) and next to some small islands to the west, a small part of the southern coast of the mainland northwest of Oenarodo.
Geumodo District
This part is the eastern part of the national park. It is located around 20 km south-southeast of Yeosu and includes the islands of Geumodo ( 금오도 ), Ando ( 안도 ) and Yeondo ( 연도 ).
history
Dadohaehaesang was designated the country's 14th national park on December 23, 1981 by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. On May 8, 1987, the first office of the national park was opened in Wando-gun County and, due to the size of the national park, the western office in Mokpo was opened on June 30, 2002.
Flora and fauna
The national park, visited by around 560,000 tourists, is rich in vegetation and fauna. Investigations came on a total of 1698 different plant species, 24 species of mammals and 231 different species of birds.
