Geomundo ( Korean 거문도 ) is a group of islands south of the Korean peninsula that belongs to South Korea .

Origin of name

The island was previously known in China as "Geomado", but when the Chinese admiral Ding Ruchang ( 丁汝昌 ) was impressed by a scholar of the island, he called it "Geomundo", which translates as "the island of the." Scholars ”.

geography

The archipelago, consisting of three islands, is located around 86 km southwest of Yeosu ( 여수시 ) and around 103 km south-southwest of Suncheon ( 순천시 ) in the eastern part of the Jeju Strait ( 제주 해협 ). Jejudo ( 제주도 ), as the largest island in the body of water and namesake of the strait, is located around 67 km southwest of Geomundo.

The three islands of the group, which form a ring around an inland body of water called Donaehae ( 도내 해 ), include:

  • Seodo ( 서도 ), as the largest island in the group to the west, has a maximum length of around 7.5 km and measures around 1.8 km at its widest point. The highest point on the island is the Eumdalsan ( 음 달산 ) with 237  m .
  • Dongdo ( 동도 ) is the second largest island in the group, is located on the eastern side, has a length of around 4.0 km and a maximum width of 1.95 km. The Manghyangsan ( 망향 산 ) is the highest point on the island with a height of 247  m .
  • Godo ( 고도 ) is the smallest island in the group. It is located between the other two on the southeast side. This island only comes to a length of 1.5 km and a maximum width of 440 m, with a height of just over 80  m .

The islands are connected by bridges and the water inside is protected from the rough sea by means of barriers. A seaport is laid out between Seodo and Godo, but the individual villages on the island each have their own moorings and small docks for fishermen on the inland waters.

To the east of the archipelago are the islands of Sosambudo ( 소 삼부도 ) and Daesambudo ( 대, ), around 2 km and 5 km away, respectively.

The archipelago, which administratively belongs to Yeosu and the province of Jeollanam-do ( 전라남도 ), can be reached by a passenger ferry from Yeosu, which usually operates twice a day between the islands and the mainland, depending on weather conditions.

history

The archipelago was first mentioned in a log book of the British Royal Navy in 1845 when the warship Samarang entered the inner part of the archipelago and the British saw it as an ideal haven for their ships. They named the island of Port Hamilton after the then Secretary of the British Admiralty, Captain MCAS Hamilton .

On April 15, 1885, three ships of the East Asian Fleet of the Royal Navy entered the natural harbor of the archipelago, hoisted the British flag and built defenses. They broke international law and defended their occupation of the island with the risk of the Russian navy influencing southern waters. Joseon, under the rule of King Gojong ( 고종 광무제 ), was too weak to react against the British occupation and tacitly accepted it. In February 1887, the British units withdrew from the island with the assurance that the Russian Navy would stay away from the archipelago.

Dadohaehaesang National Park

The archipelago together with its two neighboring islands belong to the Dadohaehaesang National Park ( 다도해 해상 국립 공원 ), which includes the island on the southwest coast of the Korean peninsula.
