Geographical location

Because of the mountains, the earth in Yeosu is relatively sloping. The coastline is very complicated and the sea water depth is shallow, which is why there are a lot of mudflats.

climate

The annual average temperature is 14.4 ° C. The mild and warm climate is characterized by an oceanic climate and because of the warm ocean currents it is not cold in winter. The annual temperature averages 25.7 ° C in summer and 2.2 ° C in winter. In relative terms, spring and autumn are longer than summer and winter.

history

Before Christ, Yeosu already existed as a Korean peninsula. In the Goryeo dynasty it was named Yeosu. Historically, many port cities in Korea have suffered great damage from attacks by Japanese pirates . Therefore, Yeosu was also specially protected against attacks. Even so, it was attacked by Japanese pirates in the southwest during the Goryeo dynasty. From 1592 to 1598, for example, the seven-year war of invasion called the Imjin War was fought by Japanese forces in Korea. Yeosu is also the origin of the Donghak uprising . The Donghak Uprising of 1893/94 was an anti-government, anti-aristocracy and anti-foreigner rebellion in Korea, which sparked the First Sino-Japanese War . It was a religiously and politically motivated movement in the Joseon Dynasty with the intention on the one hand to carry out social reforms and on the other hand to expel foreigners from the country. Many Koreans despised foreign influence over their country and the corrupt and tyrannical rule of the Joseon Dynasty. The Donghak Uprising was also one of the series of events that brought the Joseon Dynasty to an end. The Donghak ideology was a mixture of elements of Confucianism, Buddhism and Songyo (teaching by Sillas Hwarang) as well as modern-humanistic class struggle theories, which today could perhaps be viewed as Marxist.

politics

Yeosu is administered by the Yeosu City Government. The mayor is directly elected for four years and heads the Yeosu City Government. In Yeosu there are no large districts like in Seoul, but 27 small districts. The mayor's name is Kim Chungseok.

Downtown

The city center is not big. It is spread across the Jungangdong, Hakdong and Yeoseodong districts, all of which are not far from each other. Yeosu City Hall is in Hakdong. Near Jungangdong are the Ferry Terminal, Haeyang Park and Dolsan Park. Yeosu KBS, a broadcaster, is also here. There are several shopping streets in the city center. Jungangdong and Jinnamgil make up the old town and used to be the main shopping streets. Yeoseodong is an area for young people. There is a bus terminal, many new apartments, the Cheonnam National University and a few hotels. Mipyung Railway Station is not far from Yeoseodong.

Expo area

The Expo site is located in Sujeongdong, a district that is close to the port. The main train station is to the north of the Expo site. "Expo-Town" for the Expo employees and Dadohae Park are currently being built here.

Odong Island

The island is one of the most important travel destinations in Yeosu and is particularly popular with lovers. This is where the nickname "Love Island" comes from. On a cruise ship, visitors can watch dozens of seagulls circling around the ship. There is also a sidewalk and the Dongbaek train, both of which lead to the island. There is also a park, which consists of a tunnel-like walking path in the forest, a 25 meter high lighthouse, and a waterfall playing music.

Jinnamgwan Hall

The Jinnamgwan Hall is in the center of Yeosu. It is Korea's National Treasure No. 304 and the longest single-story wooden hall in Korea. The mighty hall with its 68 impressive columns was built in 1598 and served Admiral Yi as a state guesthouse and naval high command center during the Imjin War . From here the great victories of the Korean Navy were planned. As you would expect from a naval command center, the hall offers excellent views over the harbor, including the Dolsan Bridge.
