Bamboo forest in Damyang

Damyang-gun ( 담양군 ) is a South Korean district in Jeollanam-do Province ( 전라남도 ) with a population of just over 48,000 . Damyang is known for its bamboo forest Jungnogwon ( 죽녹원 ) and for its tradition of production and trade in products made from bamboo.

The small town of Damyang-eup ( 담양읍 ) is also located in the district and is the economic and administrative center of the district.

Damyang County has a size of 455 km 2 and is located northeast of Gwangju ( 광주시 ), on the northern edge of Jeollanam-do Province. It is bordered on the west by the county Jangseong ( 장성군 ), to the north by the province of Jeollanam-do ( 전라북도 ), to the east by the county Gokseong ( 곡성군 ), in the southeast of the county Hwasun ( 화순군 ) and in the south and southwest on the Gwangju metropolis. 60.6% of the area of ​​the district is forested and 23.9% is used for agriculture.

history

During the Baekje -Periode ( 백제 ) called himself the county Chujahyegun ( 추 자혜 군 ), was built during the Silla -time ( 신라 ) in Chuseonggun ( 추 성군 ) renamed and got more name changes during the Goryeo -Periode ( 고려 ) for the first time Name Damyang. Further administrative changes and changes to the name followed, until Damyang finally got its current structure and name in 1914 under Japanese rule.

For a long time, the residents of Damyang have planted small groves of bamboo trees in their backyards . For them, the bamboo was a "divine pipe", called Sindae ( 신대 ). They used the bamboo to make everyday objects of all kinds. Their goods were in great demand all over the country until the 1970s, so that most of the bamboo articles made in the country came from Damyang. Specialties such as daetongbap ( 대통 밥 , bamboo rice), bamboo schnapps and bamboo tea also came from the area. Even today you can find numerous shops that sell only household items and decorations made of bamboo.

In September 2015, the World Bamboo Fair Damyang KOREA 2015 was held in Damyang , a fair where bamboo handicrafts from all over the world could be seen.

The Damyang Bamboo Festival has been held every year in the Damyang bamboo forest since 1998 . In addition to a bamboo fair and music demonstrations with bamboo instruments, activities such as cutting bamboo with a sword, fishing with a bamboo basket, making schnapps from bamboo can be practiced.

The Jungnogwon ( 죽녹원 ) bamboo forest , which is located in the northern half of the district and was created by residents of the city of Damyang, is significant and known nationwide . South of the bamboo forest is the path from the village of Hanjaegol ( 한재 골 ) to Damyang-Eup , which is lined with primeval redwoods ( Metasequoia glyptostroboides ), a deciduous species of conifer.

Along the river that flows through Damyang, there is a forest called Gwanbangjerim ( 관방제림 ). This forest was built in 1648 in a first and created by Damyang in a second planting by the magistrate in 1854 and consists of over 420 to 400 years old zelkova , Mukubäumen and Chinese hackberry trees . This forest is considered to be one of the most beautiful of its kind in Korea. The district is also home to the Soswaewon Garden ( 소쇄원 ), which was created by Yang San-Bo (1503–1557) during the Joseon Period in the 16th century.
